Are You Suffering from an Image-Only Backup Complex?

In my last post, I talked about relearning the importance of image-based backups the hard way after I had to reformat my laptop last week. Even though I had all my files backed up, the process of loading the operating system, drivers, Windows updates, applications, and restoring my files took 12+ hours when all was said and done. If I had an image copy of my laptop hard drive before the registry became hopelessly corrupted, I could have been backup up and running in about 2 hours.

On the same day I was having my computer issues, I came across an article on the exact same topic, titled The Case for Both File and Image-Based Backup. In the article, the author describes several situations where a file-based backup solution is superior to an image-based backup solution. Take the following excerpt, for example:

File-based backups protect your customers from the more common day-to-day data loss scenarios that many organizations experience … [and] … file-based solutions allow solution providers to download their customers’ most critical business information to another location almost instantly, giving them the ability to access their most valuable records right away.

So, even though an image backup is a must-have for those worst-case scenario situations like I experienced last week, file-based backups are often a better choice for many other recovery scenarios. The most common data loss your customers experience is a user accidentally deleting a file or folder, a problem that takes two hours to resolve with an image restore vs. two minutes with a file restore solution.

The other point to keep in mind with file backups is that they’re the perfect solution for laptop users who may only connect to the corporate network on occasion, making them likely to be skipped when the scheduled image backup runs. A cloud-based file backup program, on the other hand, can back up data whenever the laptop is connected to the Internet.

If you’ve been using only one type of backup to protect your customers’ data, now is a good time to add the other type of backup, so that your customers’ data can be restored as quickly and efficiently as possible when it needs to be. Not only is this a good opportunity for potential upsell, it’s a good way for you to show your customers that their data is in good hands, and you’re going to keep their downtime to a minimum.
